Maleno Volunteers at Food Bank
One of the core operating principles at Maleno is to give back and to support our local community. On Wednesday, March 24th, six of the Maleno Property Management employees and their kids did just that by volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania.
The Second Harvest Food Bank provides food to those in need who live within eleven counties of Northwest Pennsylvania. They also create awareness and educate the community on the realities of hunger. In Pennsylvania alone, 1 in 9 people struggle with hunger. Even more startling, 1 in 7 are children.
The Maleno team and family members, eager to help, started the day by building the boxes that would be used to ship the food packed that day. A Food Bank staff member and two volunteers from the PA Pittsburgh Mission (who coincidentally live in Maleno’s Scenery Hills Apartments community) quickly organized the Maleno team into an efficient assembly line. The food packing quickly began, with boxes for frozen meats, cheeses, canned foods, cereals, and juice drinks.
Within just 2 ½ hours, 100 boxes full of foodstuffs were packed and ready to be delivered to food pantries and ultimately to those families in need, staving off hunger for another day. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone left the facility with a sense of satisfaction from a job well done along with a feeling of humbleness, knowing there is such a great need for the basic need for food and shelter in the Erie area.
Maleno also serves local families in need with housing repairs through the Maleno Family to Family Fund.
